Authorless.info (2013-ongoing) joins together findings of unforeseen artistic value. The guiding principle of this website is the conviction that work of artistic value doesn’t need an author. Authorless.info aims to research this conviction and gradually gain further insight into what “artistic value” might mean. (With Sam Weerdmeester.)

Categories
To date, the material has been split into two categories: “phenomena” and “footage”.

1. Phenomena
- Objects, sounds, movements, situations and events encountered in the world; appearances. Note: footage can also be encountered in the world. In case this fact is crucial to our evaluation, we will consider it a phenomenon.
2. Footage
- Material that refers to something.
- Material may include: photographs, drawings, films, notes, sound recordings.
Note: When a ‘world’ consists entirely of referential material, the question is whether fragments from this ‘world’ can simply be treated as footage, although it is made up of footage (such as Facebook / Google Earth).

Documentation
1. The method of documentation must be subordinate to what is documented.
- Formal aspects such as excessive contrast; stylistic devices; extreme perspective, etc. may overshadow what has been documented and draw attention to the mode of documenting.
Note: the creation of a specific style which can be identified across the entire website is not an objective.
2. Adaptations of the material are allowed, provided they serve the readability of the work.

Rules
These gradually developed rules are intended to avoid pitfalls when dealing with found material, especially with regard to “the artistic”.

1. Artistic intention
- Material produced with a clear artistic intention is excluded.
Note: to what extent one can deny an industrial designer - even though they work in an applied field - artistic awareness.
2. Change of meaning
- If the material clearly addresses an audience it can only be adopted if the original meaning changes.
3. familiarity
3- The type of material and/or the way it is handled must be relatively unknown at the moment of inclusion.
4. Resembling art
- Resembling existing art in our view says nothing about artistic value.
5. Aura / patina of original
- The aura or patina of the original cannot be a reason for selection.
6. Irony
- We cannot fall into the trap of snobbish/insecure irony.
On snobbish irony: a serious reading of the content doesn’t stand a chance when irony sets the author and their audience aside in a private chat, to which the original maker becomes subservient.
On insecure irony: an ironic treatment of material can serve as a cover for alleged tastelessness.
7. Anecdote
- An anecdote about how the material came to us should not play a role in the appreciation of the finding.
8. Excitement about finding
- Excitement about the fact of the finding in itself cannot be a reason for selection.
9. Contributors
- Personal involvement with and/or the (artistic) status of contributors may not play a role.
